The Story of Malin Kundang, a Popular Fairy Tale from West Sumatra
In Indonesia, there are many stories that are made into folk tales. One of them is about Malin Kundang, a disobedient child who is said to come from Padang, West Sumatra.
The story of Malin Kundang is often associated with the existence of a stone that is said to be the incarnation of Malin, the main character in the story. The attraction of this folk tale is the moral message implied in the story.

Malin Kundang Story
Malin grew up to be a smart and brave child, but a little naughty. They lived in poverty. Until one day when Malin grew up, he thought about seeking his fortune in a foreign country. With the hope that when he returned to his hometown, he would have become a wealthy merchant.
Malin was interested in the invitation of a merchant ship captain who was once poor and now had become a wealthy man. His determination grew stronger, Malin asked his mother for permission. Mande Rubayah initially disagreed with her son’s wishes, but because Malin kept insisting, she finally allowed it.
“My son, if you have succeeded and become a well-off person, don’t forget your mother and your hometown, son,” was the message from his mother.
It turned out that Malin’s presence on the ship was very popular. Apart from being very diligent and always ready to help, he was also a hard worker.
Several years passed, now Malin had become a captain who headed many merchant ships. He also managed to marry one of the beautiful princesses. News of his success reached Malin’s mother. Every day Mande Rubayah took the time to go to the pier hoping to meet her son, Malin.
Malin Kundang returns to his hometown
One day, their ship arrived at the village where Malin had grown up. Malin Kundang got off the ship. Then he was greeted by his mother.
“Malin Kundang, my son, why did you go so long without sending any news,” she said while hugging Malin.
Malin Kundang instead immediately let go of the hug and pushed his mother until she fell.
“The woman is shameless, just claiming to be my mother,” Malin said to his mother. Malin pretended not to know his mother, because he was embarrassed to see his mother who was old and wearing tattered clothes.
“Is that woman your mother?” asked Malin’s wife. “No, she’s just a beggar who pretended to be my mother in order to get my property,” replied Malin.
Seeing Malin’s arrogant behavior in front of his wife, Mande Rubayah was very hurt. He watched his son’s ship depart from the beach, while praying in his heart that God would punish his son.
